One of the most interesting and exciting ways of eating is to present a number of small dishes – salads, breads, dips, roasted veg etc. – instead of presenting one plate with a piece of meat on it that demands your exclusive attention. We often eat this way, especially when the veg bag arrives full of beautiful, fresh, seasonal veg. Making a few small dishes, each focussing on a different vegetable seems a much better way of doing it justice than simply serving a couple of veg on the side of a bit of meat. That said, it does tend to take a little more time to prepare several little dishes than just one plate of food – it’s always a good idea to make more than you think you’ll eat so that you’re left with plenty for subsequent lunches or snacks, that way the extra effort feels a little more justified!
This Wednesday our ‘mezze’ consisted of:
Wraps (from Paul Hollywood’s ‘How to Bake’)
Roasted green pepper, red onion and cauliflower with ‘merguez’ spices (fennel seed, coriander seed, cumin seed, sweet smoked paprika, black peppercorns all bashed up together)
Cauliflower Pakora (from the River Cottage ‘Veg Everyday’ book)
Breaded, fried leeks (from Yottam Ottolenghi’s ‘Plenty’)
Guacamole
Sweet Chilli dip (redcurrant jelly, garlic, chilli, soy sauce, cider vinegar, spring onions, salt & pepper)
We ate the roasted veg inside the wraps with guacamole – almost like veggie fajitas:
The cauliflower pakoras are a particular favourite:
